Dissolving Lip Fillers

Whilst lip fillers are praised for their non permanent results, there are instances when you may feel the need to reverse a past treatment by having your lips dissolved. Typically, our clients contact us to have their lip filler dissolved because they feel their lips are too big, mismatched or lumpy due to results achieved from visiting a poorly trained practitioner.

Other examples of the effects of a poorly trained practitioner include:

  • Poor placement of filler, leading to blocked veins or arteries which lead to swelling, infection & even necrosis if not removed in time.
  • Hard lumps due to injecting the filler too close to the surface of your lips.
  • Migration of the lip filler to make you look swollen in the wrong places
  • Overfilling which leads to pain, discolouration, sensitive lips and bruising.


Removing lip filler through the use of lip filler dissolving treatment can prevent and resolve all of these issues, if removed in time. As fashion shifts from overly filled “fake” lips to a more natural look (as famously seen with Kylie Jenner) more of our customers ask us for their lips to be dissolved and then refilled again in a safe, clinical environment to create a more natural look. It is common for clients who have had numerous lip filler treatments over the years to dissolve their lips back to a 'blank canvas' before starting with lip fillers again. This will achieve a fresher, smoother appearance.

 

The basis of the treatment is to inject Hyaluronidase into the affected area in order to break down the filler quickly and safely. Hyaluronidase is an enzyme which is produced naturally in the body at low levels and is the reason why lip filler slowly breaks down over time. It would take from 6 to 24 weeks for the body to fully dissolve lip filler naturally, which you may feel is too long to wait. 

Hyaluronidase has to be prescribed by a medical professional, and the treatment must be carried out by a fully qualified medical professional.

If you look at her top lip on the right, you can see the lip is heavier than the right left side.

Below, the left side shows the lips 2 weeks after dissolving the lip fillers. The upper lip is not as heavy and thinner.

The right side shows the lips refilled using the Russian injecting technique to give a flatter but fuller look.

The Process of Dissolving Lip Filler

In order to break down your filler, we inject a concentrated dose of hyaluronidase into the lips which causes the hyaluronic acid in the lip filler to break down. The broken down “waste” product is then carried away by your body’s own natural systems.

Before treatment, we apply a topical anaesthetic to the lips to reduce any discomfort you may experience. For lip dissolving treatments, we book you into our clinic for an hour slot. This gives us enough time hold a consultation and gather your full medical history, to do a patch test (to ensure you are not allergic to the hyaluronidase), to allow the numbing cream to take effect and then administer the injections.


After treatment, your lips may feel swollen and bruised. This can take up to two weeks to reside, after which time you will be able to book in for a lip filler appointment if you wish to refill your lips.
